As I reflect upon the last few years of my ongoing medical education, my participation in the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ & Medtronic Surgical Skills Competition certainly stands out as one of the key highlights of my pre-clinical years. I initially engaged with the competition with the hope of gaining further insight into the practical skills required for a career in surgery, and meeting other like-minded students who were keen to learn more about the demands of surgical training.
The competition itself exceeded all of my expectations: not only was my dexterity and ability to work under pressure put to the test, but I found myself surrounded by some of the most inspirational students, surgeons, and clinical educators, from all corners of the United Kingdom. I left the competition with new-found friendships, a clearer perspective of the pathway to surgical training, and advice which I will carry with me as I continue my medical education and commence my clinical career. Ultimately, I remain incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in last years competition, and will continue to encourage my peers to get involved in the future!
