A March Diploma Ceremony

79 diplomates visited the College on Friday 15th March to attend our most recent diploma ceremony. Diploma ceremonies are one of the most popular events in the College calendar, and we wereÌýpleased to welcome those receiving their diplomas and special awards to the College alongside their families and friends.

DiplomatesÌýand their loved ones had the opportunity to explore the College, visit our Surgeons' Hall Museums, take photos within the iconic Playfair building - where the diploma ceremonies take place - and connect with fellow diplomates prior to the ceremony.Ìý

Diplomas wereÌýpresented for Membership and Fellowship in specialties including General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery and more.

A special congratulations toÌýKatie Hurst and Elinor Flatt, who received Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers, and Diptendra Kumar Sarkar and Lasitha Bhagya Samarakoon, who received Fellowship of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers.

On the dental side, Diplomas were awarded for Membership in areas including Oral Surgery and Prosthodontics, with new Members also being welcomed to the Faculty of Dental Surgery.

We wereÌýdelighted to present Miss Gillian M. Tierney, Head of School of Surgery HEEM and President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), with Fellowship ad Hominem.Ìý

I was hugely honoured to receive fellowship ad-hominem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I am delighted to become part the great tradition of ºìÐÓÊÓƵ and also to have been welcomed as a member of the inclusive family of such a friendly institution. The day was full of surgical ceremony, but also an opportunity to meet the families of diplomates. A day full of laughter and joy! -ÌýMiss Gillian M. Tierney

Dr Randeep Wadhawan,ÌýHead of Department, GI, Bariatric and Robotic Surgery at Manipal Hospitals in India, was presented with the Award of Fellowship in Surgery Without Examination.

I am writing to extend my sincere gratitude to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for granting me the esteemed Fellowship. It is a privilege to receive recognition from such a venerable institution.ÌýThe convocation at ºìÐÓÊÓƵ was a magnificent affair, steeped in tradition, set against the backdrop of the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ headquarters. The experience was truly memorable.ÌýI am eager to engage with the college's academic endeavours, particularly in the realms of innovation, robotics, and examinations. I am dedicated to utilising my skills and knowledge to further the college's objectives and propel the field of surgery forward.ÌýOnce again, I express my heartfelt appreciation for this extraordinary honour. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to collaborate with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and contribute meaningfully to the surgical community. -ÌýDr Randeep Wadhawan

Congratulations toÌýDavid Bryan Thomas Robinson from the University of Wales, who was awarded theÌýGB Ong Medal 2023.ÌýThe GB Ong Medal is awarded each year to the candidate who achieves the highest mark in the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in General Surgery who chooses to affiliate to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Mr SudhindraÌýJayasimha,ÌýClinical Fellow in Paediatric Urology atÌýGreat Ormond Street Hospital for Children, wasÌýpresented with theÌýJSCFE Medal in Urology.Ìý

It was an honour to attend the recent Diploma ceremony of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and receive the Joint Surgical Colleges Medal in Urology for 2023. It was a truly memorable day for us diplomates and I must place on record my gratitude to the College for the privilege of allowing us to be a part of this tradition, and my teachers, family and friends for their unwavering support. -ÌýMr SudhindraÌýJayasimha

The Dental Faculty Medal 2023 was awarded to Professor Brian Nattress,ÌýEmeritus Professor in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Leeds and former ºìÐÓÊÓƵ Dental Executive Member, for outstanding contributions to the Dental Faculty and to Dentistry.

I was extremely proud to be part of the recent diploma ceremony and it was a privilege to receive the Dental Faculty Medal for 2023. ºìÐÓÊÓƵ has continuously supported me over the years, and it would be hard to imagine my career without the friendship and guidance of its Fellows and Members. It has been a great pleasure for me to be part of an organisation recognised internationally for its highest standards in education, training and assessments. The diploma ceremony was a special day of recognition but it also highlighted the commitment of ºìÐÓÊÓƵ to nurturing new talent. It was particularly heartening to see so many young professionals from the medical and dental world acknowledged for their achievements. -ÌýProfessor Brian Nattress
