While the gender ratio of medical students now stands at 70:30 in favour of women, this balance shifts dramatically in surgery, where the ratio reverses to 30:70. At senior levels, such as consultants and key leadership roles, the representation of women drops even further. Ƶs own leadership and volunteer basis also suffers from a significant underrepresentation of women. This reflects deeply embedded structural and cultural barriers that necessitate sustained interventions to create a more equitable pathway for women in surgery. Ƶ recognises that meaningful change will require immediate actions to attract women in its governing and volunteer bodies; medium term projects to support women surgeons currently in the profession; and longer-term strategic initiatives to transform surgical culture and systems. Purpose The Ƶ Hunter-Doig Women in Surgery Group (The Group) is established to advance gender equity in surgery through evidence-based initiatives, advocacy, and support. Taking an intersectional approach, the Group recognises that women surgeons may encounter multiple, overlapping challenges stemming from various aspects of their identity and circumstances. The Committees work will be informed by rigorous research and evaluation to ensure that resources are directed towards initiatives with demonstrable impact. The Group works to identify and address systemic barriers facing women in surgery, while promoting inclusive practices that benefit the entire surgical community. This Group will support the College's strategic objectives of enhancing diversity in its membership, and ultimately ensuring excellence in surgical practice. Governance The Group is established for an initial period of three years, during which it will be tasked by Council to deliver the initiatives detailed in the remit section below. Upon conclusion of this 3-year period an impact assessment will be conducted, and a review of the Groups remit and future will be undertaken. The Group has delegated authority from the Council to undertake activities, campaigns, advocacy and the development of supporting services to promote the role of women in surgery.
